Why your weight jumps 2–6 lbs overnight (and why it isn't fat)

You weighed yourself yesterday. You ate reasonably, moved a little, went to bed on time. This morning the scale reads 1.8 lbs heavier. What happened?
Almost certainly: nothing. To store one pound of body fat you need to eat roughly 3,500 calories beyond what you burned. Gaining 1.8 lbs of fat overnight would take a surplus of about 6,300 calories — on top of a normal day of eating. You would remember that meal. So if it isn't fat, what is the scale weighing?
Water is the main character
Your body is mostly water, and the amount fluctuates constantly:
- Sodium. A salty dinner — restaurant food, soup, processed anything — makes your body retain extra water to keep its sodium concentration stable. One high-salt meal can hold 1–3 lbs of water for a day or two.
- Carbohydrates. Carbs are stored as glycogen, and every gram of glycogen binds 3–4 grams of water. Refill depleted glycogen after a low-carb stretch or a hard workout, and the scale can rise 2–4 lbs while your body fat is unchanged.
- Hormones. Across a menstrual cycle, water retention commonly moves weight by 2–5 lbs, peaking in the days before a period. Stress hormones like cortisol also promote retention.
- Exercise itself. A new or intense workout causes temporary inflammation as muscle repairs — retained water again, often for 24–72 hours. The scale can go up right after you start training. It's not the workout failing; it's the workout working.
And then there's plain timing
Food and drink sitting in your digestive tract has weight — typically 1–4 lbs of it at any moment — and it isn't "your" weight in any meaningful sense; it's just in transit. Weigh yourself after dinner instead of before breakfast and you're measuring your meal, not your body. This is why the standard advice is to weigh at the same time each day, ideally first thing in the morning.
So is daily weighing pointless?
No — the opposite. A single reading is noisy, but a series of daily readings contains a clear signal: the trend underneath the noise. Fat change is slow and steady; water noise is fast and random. The practical takeaway: weigh daily, judge weekly. Any single morning is allowed to be weird. The trend over two weeks is the truth.
